Gatlinburg Sky Lift

Why Gatlinburg Sky Lift is the Place to Visit in 2019

Nothing quite makes for a genuine Gatlinburg adventure like taking a trip on the original Gatlinburg Sky Lift.  Nestled almost exactly in the center at the heart of Gatlinburg, the Sky Lift has become a tradition enjoyed by many who frequent the quaint town at the heart of the Smoky Mountains.

But this is no ordinary chairlift, the SkyLift takes you up (and then down) Crockett mountain for a spectacular view of the Smoky Mountains and Gatlinburg.  The views from the top are breathtaking.  The round trip is equally enjoyable for daytime views of the mountains, or dusk and evening views of Gatlinburg in lights.  I highly recommend you ride it at least once at each time of day.  Another tip is to visit during different seasons.  All seasons offer unique views that are simply beautiful.

SKY LIFT IS GATLINBURG’S OLDEST ATTRACTION

The SkyLift is Gatlinburg’s oldest attraction and adventure having opened in the 1950s.  And while I’m not old enough to have taken part in its earliest years, for as long as I can remember, I’ve ridden it yearly (but I’ll spare you the pictures of my awkward years complete with bad 80’s hair and clothes I thought were cool.  Yeah.  I’m so grateful that social media didn’t exist back then).  For those who visit the Smoky Mountains regularly, it has become a tradition for the young and old.  A trip to Gatlinburg is not complete without riding this attraction.

Gatlinburg Sky Lift and Deck

GATLINBURG SKY LIFT VIRTUALLY DESTROYED BY 2016 WILDFIRES

During the wildfires that devastated the area in November, 2016, the SkyLift was virtually destroyed as Crockett Mountain burned.  Heavy property loss and loss of life in the surrounding area left many to wonder if the area would ever fully recover.  The strip was spared major damage, but the SkyLift was closed.  The resilience of the area and its people are remarkable and by 2018 the SkyLift reopened to ride the chairlift.  You were unable to get off as the observation deck was being reconstructed.

NEW SKY PARK WITH SKYDECK

Work has continued to not only rebuild, but to expand the offerings.  Now it is back bigger and better than ever!  Before the fire, there was an observation deck and a gift shop/store atop Crockett Mountain, now it has transformed into a full destination itself, now known Gatlinburg Sky Park.

Gatlinburg Sky Deck

While there is still the traditional SkyLift  to reach the top (all shiny and new having only reopened last year), coming Spring 2019, much more awaits those who visit this iconic landmark.  SkyPark will have a larger observation deck  that expands the views with their new SkyDeck.  It is absolutely gorgeous with much more room and a classic black bear statue.  The larger deck offers more stunning views and feels less crowded.  While such an improvement is noteworthy, that’s only the tip of the iceberg of what the new SkyPark will offer.

SkyPark will also house a two-story building atop the mountain that offers even more additional views of the natural and man-made beauty.  And in addition to the usual fare of a gift shop with snacks and merchandise, they will also have a full restaurant and bar surrounded by majestic views.  Craft beers will also be available.  The opportunity to eat a scrumptious meal or grab a drink (along with your souvenirs) complement this attraction perfectly and offer even more value.  There is something about mountain air that seems to always increase the appetite. And if heights make you slightly nervous, a yummy meal or a tasty beverage should do the trick at allowing you to relax in the serenity of nature that surrounds you.  Be sure to add additional time when you visit this attraction to take in the sights and flavors that the upgraded SkyPark provide.

SKYBRIDGE IS COMING AND IT’S A RECORD BREAKER

Perhaps the most exciting of all is the addition of the Sky Bridge coming in Spring, 2019.  I won’t lie.  This is beyond exciting and something to really look forward to trying.  What is a Sky Bridge you ask?

Gatlinburg Sky Bridge

The Sky Bridge will be the longest pedestrian bridge in North America.  Not only does it offer a unique thrill for visitors but it will be a record breaking attraction when it opens. For those fearless among you and for whom heights are not an issue, this is a must do.  This bridge is 680 feet long.  And if the length of the bridge doesn’t make you nervous, at mid-point in the bridge, it is 140 feet off the ground.  If you aren’t afraid of heights or pedestrian suspension bridges, the views will be unlike any other.  Simply cannot wait to see the views from the SkyBridge!

If you are still with me so far and up for the challenge, they upped the anti and at mid-point in the bridge, there is also a glass bottom.  The view will be amazing.  Admittedly, this portion is not for the faint of heart, but don’t worry, you can enjoy the views from the deck, grab a meal or some liquid courage, or even shop if that is more your version of adventure.  It is exciting that the best view in Gatlinburg is offering multiple ways to view the mountains and town.

I would recommend the Sky Lift as one of the top attractions for your Gatlinburg bucket list, but now it quite literally moves to the top of the list.  There is literally something for everyone and a trip to the Smoky Mountains is not complete without visiting.  Already one of Gatlinburg’s must-do traditions, SkyPark literally raises the bar in Gatlinburg attractions.

Will you go on the SkyBridge or is the SkyLift thrilling enough?  Let me know in the comments.
